It’s a familiar story. A man is walking along the beach. From a distance, he sees a young boy pick something up and toss it into the water. When the man gets closer, he sees what the boy is doing…picking up starfish and throwing them back into the ocean. The boy explains that, if the starfish remain on the beach they’ll die.
The man tries to reason with the boy and tells him, “There must be thousands of starfish on this beach. You can’t save them all. What difference can you make?” The boy has found another starfish. As he picks it up and nimbly sends it into life-giving water, he smiles and tells the man, “I made a difference to that one!”
With total medical debt in the United States somewhere around 200 billion dollars, no one person or group can help everyone.
